For me, client-side java took about 2-years of actually writing software that I wanted or as an idea that somebody suggested. Writing code caused me to research back through the books I thought I had already memorized. There is a big chasm between grasping the concept from a book and a whole different mind-set actually using the concept for your own purposes. Java has like 5 more levels after SE client-side, desktop applications. Proficient? I would opinion proficiency in Java is a moving target, depending upon how much of the total Java technologies. JavaFX is brand new. Whether JavaFX reaches maturity will depend upon if Sun is still around in the next few years.

If you're a complete idiot, longer than you'll ever live. If you're particularly clever and have some free time, not long at all. :) My point is, it's different for everyone. It all depends on the time YOU put into it, and how hard you're willing to work. It's feasible, if you're deadly serious and get some good books, that you can become quite adept in a programming language in a month. You can pick up the basic syntax in a day or two if you're good at catching on to patterns. Learning the APIs is what's going to take a while.

Bochi Is correct
here is a walk through on Microsoft web site.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/crawford_02july01.mspx

This is going to sound strange but If their are yard sales in your area hit them up maybe you would get lucky and find a wirless AP for a bit of nothingthats how I got a lot of stuff for computers cheap.

Of If you have the extra money just go get a Wirless AP or the wirless adpater for the xbox .

The method you are trying to set up your laptop does work I done it my self

That would all depend on your own pace on how fast you usually take things in. If you are a fast learner i would say a few weeks and your good to go.

First of all, create a test PHP page that has the following code:
<?php
phpinfo();
?>

Open this and see if mysql is listed somewhere.

If it is, then php and mysql are working. You just need to connect to the database.

If it isn't, then you need to edit the php.ini file. Go the the bottom of the file and add the line
extension=php_mysql.dll
Then restart apache.

If that doesn't work, I would install PHP again from scratch following the tutorial on http://www.php-mysql-tutorial.com/

Did you configure the Routing and Remote Access service on the laptop? Because, the way you are setting this up is to use the laptop as a router/expensive wireless card. If you could link any instructions that you have followed it would help immensely.

Try setting the Xbox to obtain an IP address automatically. Also, make sure that you have set the computer's wireless connection to "Allow other Network users to connect through this computer's internet connection".
This is found by opening "Network Connections" right clicking on your wireless connection and clicking on properties. Select the "Advanced" tab and make sure the ICS box is checked. Then click ok.

You will have to recompile php using the --with-mysql flag.

Check the php documentation for more details.
